Everything you need to know before booking a guided black bear hunt in Minnesota.
When is the Minnesota black bear season?
The Minnesota black bear season typically opens September 1 and runs into early October. Exact dates vary slightly by year and zone. We schedule our 6-day hunts around the first three weeks of September when bait activity is strongest.
Do I need to apply for a license or tag?
Yes. Minnesota requires a bear license and a tag. Non-residents generally enter a lottery drawing, and the application deadline is usually in early May. We guide you through the application process once you book, but you are responsible for securing your own license and tag.
What weapons are allowed?
We accept archery, rifle, and muzzleloader hunters. Bring a weapon you’re confident shooting from an elevated stand out to 50–100 yards. If you’re unsure about setup, we can recommend calibers and broadheads that work well for black bears.
What are the accommodations like?
You’ll stay in a clean Northwoods cabin with beds, hot showers, a kitchen, and a common area. We provide home-cooked meals, snacks, and coffee. Cell service is limited, but the camp has power and water.
How do baited stands work?
We start baiting stands in early summer and refresh them throughout the season. Trail cameras let us track which bears visit each site and when. Each evening we place you on the most active stand based on the latest intel.
What if I don’t see a bear?
We can’t guarantee a shot, but our pre-season work and stand rotation give you a strong chance. If you don’t harvest during your hunt, we may offer reduced-rate return hunts subject to stand availability.
Can I bring a non-hunter?
Yes. Non-hunters can join camp for meals, lodging, and fishing for $995. They can’t hunt or carry a weapon without a valid license.
What should I pack?
Bring weather-appropriate layers, rain gear, a headlamp, binoculars, hunting knife, cooler for meat, and any personal gear you need. We’ll send a full packing list after you book.
How do I get to camp?
Camp is near Togo, Minnesota, about 45 minutes north of Grand Rapids and three hours north of the Twin Cities. We can arrange airport pickup from Duluth or Hibbing for an additional fee. Detailed directions are provided after booking.
What happens after I harvest a bear?
Your guide helps track, recover, field dress, and cape the bear. We have a processing area at camp, but taxidermy and butcher work after you leave are your responsibility. We’ll also help you get it tagged according to Minnesota regulations.
